''Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching." (II Timothy 4:2)
Primarily God saves us to be His child. His ultimate intent however, is that we be His instruments and His spiritual messenger. His message must be a part of every child of God. It is inconsistent with Biblical Christianity that one would claim to be a part of the Kingdom of God without a desire and a commitment to share the message of the Gospel. If we are to be obedient to the word of God, we will have a heart broken by a conviction of sin, filled with the Holy Spirit and crushed into submission to God's purpose. It is only then that we can be the holy example of God's message and the proclaimer of truth.
There is a difference in giving a testimony and preaching. Some have been specifically called to give their full time to preaching the Gospel. Every child of God has been called to proclaiming God's truth and the light of His Gospel to a dark world.
Before God's message can liberate other people, liberation must first be real in you. Take the time to learn the truth of His word and seek the anointing of His Holy Spirit in preparation to proclaim that truth to a lost world. Then allow God to ''set your words on fire'' for His glory.
This proclamation of truth is not an exercise for only those times when we feel like doing it. This verse is teaching us to be ready to proclaim the truth in season or out of season. This has less to do with the circumstance around us and more to do with what is within us. We must be ready to proclaim truth whether we feel like it or not. It is important that the activity of your Christian life be based upon obedience to Him and not how you feel. If we do only what we feel inclined to do, some of us would never do anything. There are some people who are totally unemployable in the spiritual realm. They are spiritually feeble and weak, and they refuse to do anything unless they are supernaturally inspired. The proof that our relationship is right with God is that we do our best whether we feel inspired or not.
One of the worst traps a Christian worker can fall into is to become obsessed with his own exceptional moments of inspiration. There are mountaintop experiences in your life with times that are gifts from God. You cannot give them to yourself when you choose. If you plan to be faithful to God only when you are in an ecstatic mountaintop experience, you actually become a burden to God. If you make a god out of your best moments, you will find that God will fade out of your life never to return until you are obedient in the work He has placed before you. Your focus must be on Him and not on the exceptional moments He has given you. Your devotion must be to the Giver and not to the gift.
Do you feel like serving Him today? That really doesn't matter. You are to serve Him faithfully and obediently anyway because He has commanded it. Proclaim His truth today whether it is in season or out of season.
Mozambique, with its more than 20 million souls, is a testimony to the power of God. It has experienced the fastest church growth of any Black African country during the 1990's and early this century. Before then, it had some of the largest un-evangelized areas in the whole African region. The total Christian population more than doubled between 1988 and 2000. Now the training of church leadership is an urgent priority and should captivate our prayer focus today.
''The primary qualification for a missionary is not love for souls as we so often hear, but love for Christ."
Vance Havner
