THE RISK OF BEING LIGHT
During World War II, a U. S. aircraft carrier was plowing through heavy seas in the South Pacific on a very dark and ominous night. There were no lights on the ship because of enemy submarines. One plane was missing. Somewhere in that pitch black sky, it was searching in a seemingly futile search for that carrier - its only landing place, its only hope of not being swallowed up by the giant ocean. All the crew and the ship's Captain knew the terrible feeling the pilot must have. The Captain knew the risk when he gave the order, ''Light up the ship''. Soon the plane zoomed onto the deck like a homing pigeon.
God knew the risk when He gave the command at Bethlehem, light up the world. Then Jesus was born. A new and radiant light began to shine, pushing back the darkness of the world of spiritual ignorance, and of sin and despair. Like a ship lit up in an otherwise darkened sea of sinful humanity , Christ came as ''the Light of the world." (John 8:12)
John wrote, ''The darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining." (I John 2:8) When Jesus the Savior entered the world, it was like the sunrise breaking radiantly over the horizon of human history. (Luke 1:78-79) Because of His amazing grace, the Son of God died on the Cross to save us from eternal darkness. What a blessed message for Christmas - and for every day of the year.
No one would understand that better than this blind beggar in John 9 that received his sight from the Lord Jesus that day. He was a man with a congenital defect. He had been blind since birth. This man's darkness had been great:·Truly, the darker it is for a person, the brighter seems the light when Jesus comes in. It is encouraging to know that in this dark world, Jesus is still the light for all of us.
Now we must reflect Him as we have become lights for a dark world. The risks were great for Him and for us as we seek to illuminate a dark culture.

PRAY FOR THE WORLD
Many of the Palau, especially among the older people,  follow the Modekngei movement, a religion that is unique to Palau and a mixture of Christianity and magic. Pray that God would do a great work calling out His people to be missionaries from among the Palau and their 96% Christian population. Many of them need to go out to smaller, un-evangelized island communities that are nearby.

A WORD FOR YOUR WORLD TODAY
''NEARER HOME - an aged Christian, with the snow of time on his head, may remind us that those points of earth are whitest which are nearest Heaven."
