''And they said one to another, ''Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?'' (Luke 24:32)
On one occasion I was discussing with someone why a man we both loved, who was in the ministry, was not being very effective. My friend, whose judgment I value greatly, made this statement, ''he just doesn't have the fire in his gut." That may sound a bit crude to some, but it probably means the same thing as our verse describing the Disciples on the road to Emmaus. They had been walking along with Jesus without knowing that it was actually Him. When their eyes were opened, and they knew who it was, they said to one another, ''did not our heart bum within us while He talked with us?''
We need to learn this secret of the burning heart. As we seek to do the will of God, Jesus speaks to us and a fire within us is set ablaze. This must be something like what Jeremiah experienced when he said, ''thy word is like a fire burning in my bones." Is there a fire burning inside of you?
If you have that fire, don't take it for granted - it is a precious possession. If you do not have it, seek it fervently through prayer, the Word and involvement in ministry.  Do not try to fake it -painted fire warms no one.
It is one thing to have that wonderful vision in the beginning of our walk with the Lord, but then we must learn to maintain the secret of the burning heart - a heart that can go through anything. It seems to me that it is the simple day-by-day commonplace duties and people that smother the burning heart -unless we've learned the secret of abiding in Jesus.
If the Spirit of God has stirred you, make as many of your decisions as possible irrevocable, and let the consequences be what they will. We cannot stay forever on the ''Mount of Transfiguration," basking in the light of our mountaintop experience. We must obey the light we receive there. We must put it into action. When God gives us a vision, we must transact business with Him at that point no matter what the cost.
Some would say this is only emotional  double  talk, but  if it is an emotion  that has been kindled  by  the  Spirit of   God, you  must allow it to have its way in your life. I have great sympathy for a believer who has never felt the fire burning within him. When that fire begins to burn in your heart, keep it stirred and keep it blazing for the Glory of God.
Pray today for the Republic of Croatia in Eastern Europe. This nation of more than 5 million souls has been torn apart by tragic ethnic cleansing. Over 1,600 years of great power and rivalries lie behind the division between the related Croat and Serb peoples. Their mutual hatred dominated the politics of the former Yugoslavia and was one of the causes of the Balkan wars of the l990's. This country, along with Bosnia and Herzegovinia, need to understand the forgiveness of the Christian Gospel.
History tells us that the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church. That can and should be the case in Croatia.                               As God's people pray and missionaries go, we could see one of the greatest harvests of souls in this country in the modem missionary movement. Pray fervently for Croatia.
''Oh, that we were deeply moved by the languishing state of Christ's cause upon the earth today, by the inroads of the enemy and the awful desolation he has wrought in Zion; alas, that a spirit of indifference, or at least a fatalistic stoicism, is freezing so many of us."
